Officials inaugurate a new joint healthcare center in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee has inaugurated the Forensic Science and Protective Medicine Facility at the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center Campus, a $245 million investment aimed at enhancing forensic capabilities in the region. The 217,150-square-foot facility features advanced crime labs, autopsy suites, evidence storage, and emergency management options.

Groundbreaking took place nearly three years ago, with funding from state and county sources. Governor Tony Evers emphasized the facility’s potential to support victims, increase efficiency, and boost educational opportunities for future forensic professionals. The facility houses multiple offices, including the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Milwaukee Crime Lab and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office, promoting collaboration and streamlined operations.

With over 70,000 square feet allocated to the crime lab, it replaces its older location from the early ’80s. The Medical Examiner’s Office includes 12 autopsy stations, with a private area for family members. Dr. Wieslawa Tlomak noted the facility as a significant investment in forensic science and death investigation in Milwaukee County, highlighting the upgraded space and technology.
