A star-studded lineup of Australian musicians gathered at Accor Stadium to pay tribute to retired Souths star Jai Arrow and former Wallaby Nathan Charles during the NRL Grand Final.
Indie pop sensation Amy Shark kicked off the emotional event with a stirring rendition of “You Will Never Walk Alone,” as Arrow and Charles made a lap of honor. Shark then teamed up with Dave Gleeson, lead singer of The Screaming Jets, to perform a cover of “What’s Going On” by 4 Non Blondes.
Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson joined the duo, and together they concluded the performance with Tina Turner’s classic, “Simply the Best,” to the delight of the audience.
The tribute was particularly poignant, as Charles, who disclosed his motor neurone disease diagnosis just days before the event, received heartfelt support. NRL CEO Peter V’Landys stated, “This is for all those looking for inspiration. We’re there for you…”
Each musician’s appearance fee was reportedly donated to the fight against MND. Despite some mixed reactions to the performance, the event successfully celebrated Arrow and Charles’ impact and drew attention to the battle against motor neurone disease.
In related news, Tones And I was initially set to perform but could not participate due to scheduling conflicts. While Silverchair’s Daniel Johns confirmed the band would not reunite for the event, other artists stepped up to ensure a memorable tribute.
