Title: ‘It’s a catalyst for culture and arts’: 100-year-old grain silo gets mural upgrade
Art has always held significance in Montana, with community leaders in Glendive augmenting local culture through a massive mural on the historic GTA grain elevator, thanks to Bozeman artist Griffin Foster.
Foster’s mural, inspired by his experiences in eastern Montana, aims to reflect the classic agricultural essence of the region. His connection to the area deepened during a branding event, where he even participated in wrestling calves. This inspiration fueled his vision for the silo’s transformation.
Funded by the Montana Department of Commerce’s Tourism Development Grant, the project seeks to entice travelers off the interstate and into Glendive. Community leaders envision it as not only a tourism draw but also a way to increase visibility for arts and culture in eastern Montana, which has traditionally had fewer artistic outlets.
As Jaime Shanks of the Eastern Plains Economic Development Corporation puts it, “It’s a catalyst for culture and arts.” The mural project aims to establish Glendive as an emerging arts hub, with hopes of achieving a vibrant cultural scene similar to other regions in the state. The mural is expected to be completed by mid-October, weather permitting.
