The Group of Seven (G7) nations has announced a coordinated release of 100 million barrels of diesel and other energy reserves through the International Energy Agency (IEA) to stabilize global energy markets. This initiative, led by French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to counteract rising diesel prices and supply disruptions caused by the ongoing war in Iran.
The release will begin immediately and continue for four months, focusing on frontloading a significant portion within the first 20 days. This decision comes amid increased pressure from the U.S. on European countries to use their emergency diesel stocks, with prior warnings that not doing so might result in a U.S. export ban on diesel.
This recent action builds on a previous 400-million-barrel emergency stock release coordinated by the IEA in March, with approximately two-thirds already utilized as of this week, according to IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.
