Exploring Czechia’s Rock Cities: A Journey Through Prague and Beyond

Discovering Northern Czechia: A Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

While Prague tends to steal the spotlight as the main attraction for travelers to Czechia, the northern parts of the country offer a distinctive and picturesque experience. This region showcases stunning sandstone landscapes, charming towns, family-friendly activities, and rejuvenating thermal spas, with the breathtaking sights of Saxon Switzerland just across the border.

48 Hours in Prague with the Visitor Pass

Although Prague is rich with beauty and history, taking just 48 hours to explore is manageable with the Prague Visitor Pass. This pass not only provides access to public transit, including a ride on the historic Tram 42, but also admission to a variety of museums, guided tours, and river cruises, ensuring that you can experience the city’s charm without feeling rushed.

During our 48 hours, we rode the historic tram, visited key attractions, and enjoyed guided tours of the Old Town and the Jewish Quarter. A unique highlight was a medieval tour that transported us beneath modern Prague’s streets, revealing insights into the city’s past.

Outdoor Activities in Northern Czechia

After our Prague stay, we ventured northward to explore Northern Czechia’s remarkable landscapes and attractions:

  1. Rock Cities of Czechia:

    • Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) is renowned for its remarkable sandstone formations, castles, and breathtaking views.
    • Prachov Rocks offers numerous trails. We took a challenging 3.5-kilometer circular trail, featuring panoramic vistas and towering rock formations.
  2. Adršpach Rock City:

    • Known for its otherworldly appearance, Adršpach features trails that traverse scenic lakes, dramatic cliffs, and picturesque rock shapes like The Lovers and The Tooth. Make sure to secure a reservation during busy seasons.
  3. Treetop Walk Krkonoše:

    • This installation allows visitors to view the Krkonoše National Park from above, with a 43-meter observation tower providing sweeping sights of lush forests.
  4. Family Attractions:

    • The Bear Trail offers interactive experiences and the chance to observe two resident brown bears, adding an educational twist to a family visit.

Relaxation in Saxon Switzerland

Our journey wrapped up in Saxon Switzerland, an area famous for its striking natural beauty.

  • Bastei Bridge: An iconic landmark, this stone bridge offers stunning views of the Elbe Valley and showcases the history of early European tourism.

  • Hotel Elbresidenz and Toskana Therme: After several days of outdoor adventures, we stayed at the Hotel Elbresidenz. Its wellness facilities and proximity to the Toskana Therme made for a perfect relaxation spot, highlighted by the Liquid Sound® experience—a calming pool where music and light create an immersive atmosphere.

Visiting Northern Czechia is an enriching experience filled with a perfect blend of adventure, scenic beauty, cultural exploration, and relaxation. Whether you’re strolling through historic streets in Prague or hiking through breathtaking landscapes, the journey promises unforgettable memories.
