Despite the scorching temperatures, Ukraine supporters gather to celebrate culture – San Diego Union-Tribune

The Ukrainian Heritage Celebration in Liberty Station attracted attendees, despite the intense heat. Iryna Bershadska, an airbrush artist who left Ukraine a decade ago, expressed her longing for traditional food, particularly plov, which reminded her of home.

The event was organized by Krystsina Shchelkunova’s Slavic Refugee and Immigrant Services Organization, founded in 2022 to raise awareness and support against the ongoing conflict with Russia. Shchelkunova highlighted the importance of sharing Ukrainian culture, cuisine, and traditions with Americans.

The festival featured various culinary delights, live performances, a children’s area, workshops, and an artisan village. Gary Hirsh, whose family roots trace back to Ukraine, sought a sense of connection through the event, despite lower-than-anticipated attendance due to the heat.

Hanna Shutieieva, a recent Ukrainian immigrant, expressed pride in her culture, emphasizing the importance of preserving it and thanking Americans for their support.
