A vibrant celebration of Assamese culture took place at the Consulate General of India in Houston, featuring the screening of “Bhupenda Uncut,” a documentary honoring the life and legacy of legendary Assamese artist Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The event showcased traditional Assamese dance, soulful music, and regional cuisine, enhancing the cultural experience.
Ambassador Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri delivered a keynote address highlighting Hazarika’s significant contributions to Indian art and music, while Consulate General DC Manjunath acknowledged the Assamese community’s impact in Houston.
Directed by Bobbeeta Sharma and produced by Chinmoy Sharma, “Bhupenda Uncut” offered an authentic glimpse into Hazarika’s life, underscoring his influence that transcended regional boundaries. The Assamese Cultural Society of Greater Houston (ACSGH) played a key role in curating the event.
In a later post, Ambassador Puri reflected on the event’s significance, noting that Hazarika’s “voice still travels without a passport,” serving as a cultural bridge for the Assamese diaspora. Hazarika, known as ‘Sudhakantha,’ remains a pivotal cultural figure whose work resonates deeply across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also honored him, stating that his music encapsulates Assam’s spirit.
