NASA and Energy Department Propel a New Era of Nuclear-Powered Exploration

NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are embarking on a new era of deep-space exploration by developing advanced nuclear technologies for safe and reliable space travel. This collaboration aims to enhance civil space exploration, promote scientific discoveries, and reinforce U.S. leadership in space nuclear power.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman highlighted the transformative potential of nuclear power, allowing missions to reach further and last longer. The recent Memorandum of Understanding between NASA and DOE establishes a detailed collaboration framework for various aspects of space nuclear development, emphasizing safety.

This agreement was formalized at the Golden Age Summit and aligns with President Trump’s vision for a nuclear renaissance in America’s space endeavors. Key milestones include the planned launch of NASA’s Space Reactor-1 in 2028 and the Lunar Reactor-1, crucial for sustaining future lunar bases and Mars missions.

NASA is also advancing its use of radioisotope power systems, exemplified by the Dragonfly mission to Titan and support for the ESA’s Rosalind Franklin Mars rover, ensuring operational capabilities in extreme environments.
