Government to Encourage Dietary Variety and Emphasize Protein-Rich Foods in Battle Against Malnutrition | India News

The Indian government is intensifying efforts against malnutrition by focusing on dietary diversity and the significance of protein-rich foods, particularly for children enrolled in approximately 14 lakh anganwadi centres across the nation. This initiative is part of the annual “Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026,” launching on September 9 in Varanasi.

The campaign, themed “Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari,” aims to place anganwadi centres at the forefront of community-led nutrition and early childhood development initiatives. A key element will be raising awareness about protein-rich foods sourced from both plants and animals, such as pulses, legumes, nuts, seeds, dairy products, and eggs.

To enhance community involvement, the government plans to form anganwadi management committees that include various stakeholders including anganwadi and Asha workers, mothers of enrolled children, members from self-help groups, and local educators.

Additionally, new guidelines for the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) will emphasize the provision of hot cooked meals and promote a reduction in added sugars and salt in supplementary nutrition.
