San Diego businesswoman Ashley Head broadens the Curls Poppin’ doll collection with Men of Culture.

Ashley Head, the founder and CEO of Curls Poppin’, is making waves in the doll industry with his innovative line that celebrates diversity. The idea for creating a doll struck him while living in the Dominican Republic, where he initially envisioned a doll resembling himself. Despite initial setbacks—including the disappointment of receiving a doll with blue eyes instead of the brown ones he requested—Ashley persevered. In 2018, he launched Olivia, a dark-skinned doll with curly hair, which energized him to expand his vision.

Now, he is broadening the product line with “Men of Culture,” featuring male dolls of color, claiming to be the first all-male doll line of its kind. The first doll, named Manny, is based on Emmanuel Rodriguez, a former student and model for the Curls Poppin’ brand. Rodriguez expressed excitement about the representation and the personal connection the doll brings, reflecting the importance of visibility for young people.

Head’s aim is to inspire not just his own sons but children everywhere to pursue their dreams without the fear of judgment. He emphasizes that by following one’s vision, “magic can happen.” The line will include 12 dolls, with Manny currently available for presale. This initiative not only disrupts the conventional doll market but also promotes inclusivity and empowerment through play.
