Over 100 Pet Rats Found in Cars in Eugene
EUGENE, Ore. — More than 100 pet rats were discovered in two parked cars in Eugene last month, according to the local police department.
On September 23 around 10:30 a.m., officers responded to a call regarding two vehicles being towed. Upon removing a tarp from one car—a blue Saturn—officers found numerous rats inside. The car was in poor condition, with rat feces throughout, chewed-up seat cushions, trash, and insufficient food and water.
More rats were located in a nearby gold Suburban.
The owner of the rats claimed they were rescued and attempted to lure them out of the cars using yogurt, but the rats proved difficult to catch. Eventually, 52 rats were taken to the Greenhill Humane Society. After arriving at the facility, three of the rats gave birth to 18 newborns.
The vehicles were towed to a yard with some rats still inside, and animal welfare will continue to provide food and water until Greenhill can accommodate more rats. The police are currently conducting a neglect investigation regarding the case.
