No-Cost Weatherization Improvements Available for Qualified Houston Families to Reduce Energy Costs

Weatherization Assistance Program in Houston

HOUSTON – The heat and humidity can strain both homes and energy bills. Fortunately, for some income-eligible households, a weatherization assistance program can enhance energy efficiency without costing residents anything.

Antonia Coronado is one of the beneficiaries of CenterPoint Energy’s Home Weatherization Assistance Program. With the aid of Laura Escamilla from the Tejano Center, Coronado is making improvements designed to retain conditioned air within her home. Contractors are sealing cracks around doors, covering holes, and addressing other areas that allow air to escape. This assistance is crucial for Coronado, who couldn’t afford these repairs on her own.

Why Weatherization Can Be Costly

Though energy-efficient improvements can save homeowners money in the long run, high upfront costs can be a barrier. Freddy Salazar from Afford Your Electricity notes that insulating a 1,000-square-foot home with minimal insulation may cost between $1,200 and $1,700. This is particularly important in Houston, where uninsulated attics can experience temperatures ranging from 150°F to 180°F, allowing heat to seep into the living space. Salazar explains that it could take up to seven years to recover the initial insulation cost through energy savings, while the insulation itself can last around 20 years.

Simple Ways to Prevent Air Escaping

Homeowners and renters can also take inexpensive measures to prevent air loss. Salazar advises checking for drafts around doors and windows. Using weatherstripping to seal gaps in doors and caulking or metal tape for window units can help keep conditioned air inside and reduce energy use.

Qualifications for Weatherization Assistance

CenterPoint’s Home Weatherization Assistance Program is available to qualifying households that meet the following criteria:

  • Residential customers in CenterPoint Energy’s Houston Electric Service territory
  • Homes that are at least 16 years old
  • Participate in public assistance programs such as SNAP, Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income

The Tejano Center also assists non-English speakers with the application process, including online submissions.
