Maine Residents Urged to Prepare for Cold Weather and High Heating Costs
As cold weather approaches, Maine energy officials are encouraging residents to take action early, particularly with elevated heating fuel prices. According to a recent report from the Maine Department of Energy Resources, Maine remains the most heating oil-dependent state in the nation, with about half of households relying on oil for heating.
Currently, the average price for heating oil stands at $5.96 per gallon, which translates to an increase of approximately $725 for a typical home tank compared to last year.
To assist residents with rising costs, state energy officials recently conducted a community webinar to discuss resources, energy alternatives, and weatherization improvements available this winter.
Applying for Home Energy Assistance
Residents are advised to apply for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) as soon as possible. Sarah Johnson, the manager of Home Energy Assistance Programs, highlighted the necessary documentation needed during the application process:
- Proof of Citizenship: Acceptable documents include a U.S. passport, REAL ID, or birth certificates with required information.
- Primary Applicant Requirements: An unexpired photo ID and Social Security cards for all household members.
Officials stress the importance of scheduling appointments early, especially as calendars fill quickly, typically extending into late October or early November.
Emergency Fuel Assistance and Resources
For those in immediate heating crises or unable to afford scheduled deliveries, state officials recommend calling 2-1-1. This service connects households to local Community Action Agencies that can provide emergency fuel assistance.
