Meta partners with firms to manage the ‘disorder’ of AI bot business interactions.

Meta, Walmart, Stripe, and other companies are collaborating to establish a “personal agent protocol” intended to streamline the integration of AI agents in the business sector. Co-founded by Bret Taylor, the initiative aims to create an open standard for how these agents interact with businesses. Taylor emphasized the need for clarity regarding when an agent is acting as a representative versus a non-human bot.

Meta’s Muse has gained significant popularity since its launch, surpassing other AI agents like ChatGPT in downloads on Apple’s App Store. However, concerns about website scraping have led companies like Amazon to block Meta’s agents, and they have taken legal action against competing AI services.

The proposed standard would improve authentication processes and enhance visibility into agents’ actions, akin to how logging into websites works with established credentials. David Singleton from Meta emphasized the importance of security, suggesting that the standard would enhance customer control over personal data.

Singleton remarked on Muse’s rapid user growth, noting its diverse applications for everyday tasks. While major AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic have not yet joined the initiative, Taylor expressed hopes for their participation, underscoring the goal of creating an open standard for the industry.
