Cutting it Loose
Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb against the Vikings in Week Three, leading to undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels making his starting debut against the Packers on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. Daniels secured the backup role in training camp and stood out during the preseason with 239 passing yards, one touchdown, an 83.4 passer rating, and 37 rushing yards. The former Kansas star displayed a compact release, the ability to make off-platform throws, scrambling skills, and good touch on the ball. After the team’s rough 0-3 start, Daniels aims to revive the offense in Week Four. Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson praised his captivating energy and confidence on the field.
“If there’s a guy that I’ve been around that’s been this young [that’s prepared] to go knock out an opportunity, it would be JD,” Robinson said. “He will not be scared. He’s got juice and a ton of confidence… At the end of the day, when the football is kicked off at one o’clock, it’s football to him. He needs to trust himself, cut it loose, and trust his preparation.”
Getting Ted Rolling
Rookie Ted Hurst III scored a 40-yard touchdown on a post route against the Vikings, narrowing the contest to 10-7. This was Hurst’s only reception of the day, influenced by several factors. Known for his quick acceleration into routes and catch-and-run ability, he exhibits excellent ball-tracking and footwork. When asked about the limited targets, Robinson stressed the need to find ways to increase Hurst’s involvement for offensive growth.
“Coverage can dictate where things go at certain times,” Robinson noted. “He definitely had opportunities for more touches… but yeah, we’ve got to keep Ted rolling. He’s separating, he’s open, and we definitely need to find him when he is.”
Beast Mode
A’Shawn Robinson recorded the second interception of his career against the Vikings after Vita Vea deflected Kyler Murray’s pass. Robinson helped set the defensive tone, limiting the Vikings to just 230 yards of offense and a 13% success rate on third downs. Described as a “beast,” he brings tremendous strength to the defensive line, overwhelming offensive linemen and making it difficult for running backs to escape once he locks onto them.
“Well, he’s a beast,” said Larry Foote about Robinson. “Just the leadership he brings… he’s an animal. He’s mean.”
