Enhanced Performance Area at the City Heights/Weingart Library Now Open Again

The City of San Diego has celebrated the grand opening of the revitalized Performance Annex at the City Heights/Weingart Library. This cultural hub has received major upgrades for the first time in nearly three decades, transforming it into a unique black-box theater that will offer free performances including theater, music, and dance.

City Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera emphasized the significance of these improvements for enhancing accessibility and creating a welcoming environment for local artists and the community. Notable upgrades include new dressing rooms, a green room, restrooms, and facilities for ticketing and security, along with sustainability features like solar panels.

Originally built in 1998, the Performance Annex is the only city-owned black-box theater in San Diego, further enriched by the capacity to serve as an outdoor amphitheater in collaboration with nearby Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park.

Library Director Misty Jones and Congresswoman Sara Jacobs highlighted the transformative potential of investing in the arts, with Jacobs securing $1 million in federal funding for the project. State Senator Akilah Weber Pierson also stressed the importance of such investments for fostering community creativity and accessibility.

The first event took place on September 26, with upcoming highlights including the Autumn Lantern Festival on October 3 and a Dia de los Muertos celebration on October 31.
