A U.S. Department of Energy electrical engineer, Ashton Hamed Ellaboudy, was arrested for allegedly supporting the Iran-backed Houthi rebels by purchasing materials for homemade explosives and drone components. He traveled to Yemen last September, claiming to assist the Houthis with improving communication systems, and was reportedly smuggled into and out of the country. Upon returning, he misled Customs officials about his trip’s purpose.
The FBI had been monitoring Ellaboudy’s activities, which included the purchase of chemicals such as acetone and sodium bisulphate, as well as drone parts. He communicated with informants posing as Houthi operatives, providing assistance aimed at enhancing their capabilities. The allegations coincide with renewed conflict in Yemen, raising serious security concerns. Ellaboudy faces charges under U.S. laws against supporting designated terrorist organizations. He is expected to appear in court shortly.
