Proposed Bowling Center and Entertainment Facility for Hilo

Hilo is moving towards the potential revival of a bowling alley with KBXtreme Hilo LLC’s proposed development of a bowling and entertainment complex. The Windward Planning Commission has unanimously recommended amendments to an ordinance that would permit construction on a 5.075-acre parcel at 279 Komohana St. This development comes after Hilo’s last bowling alley, Hilo Lanes, closed in 2014.

Key points include:

– KBXtreme received a 10-year extension for construction and relief from certain water commitment deadlines, allowing flexibility in infrastructure design, such as street lighting and sidewalks.
– The property, acquired for $575,000 in 2017, is now assessed at nearly $1.3 million.
– Construction is projected to exceed $10 million, with a timeline of 18 to 24 months following permit approvals.
– The facility is expected to include food services, arcade games, and community events, aiming to cater to various local demographic needs, including college students and families.
– There are ongoing discussions about necessary infrastructure improvements to ensure pedestrian safety, especially regarding curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
– Community groups are emphasizing the need for accessible and safe pathways around the facility, demonstrating a collaborative approach to urban planning in Hilo.

The project reflects a community-driven effort to enhance local recreation options while addressing infrastructure safety and accessibility concerns.
