Milwaukee County Recognizes Latiné Heritage Month
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed September 15 through October 15 as Latiné Heritage Month, celebrating the diverse histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of individuals with ancestral roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson, alongside Supervisors Gómez-Tom and Miguel Martinez, spearheaded a resolution in 2023 to formally acknowledge this month within the county.
“Latiné Heritage Month celebrates the people, families, traditions, and stories that make Milwaukee County stronger and more vibrant,” said Chairwoman Nicholson, the first Afro-Latina to lead the Board. “This month is a chance to honor our heritage, celebrate generations that have built our community, and recognize how Latiné residents are shaping our future.”
Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez added, “It’s crucial to uplift the contributions of our Latiné brothers and sisters. This month reminds us of our shared responsibility to strengthen our community for future generations.”
Supervisor Caroline Gómez-Tom further emphasized, “Latiné Heritage Month offers a platform to celebrate the vital roles our cultures and experiences play in making Milwaukee a special place. I am dedicated to ensuring every resident has the resources they need to thrive.”
Throughout the month, Milwaukee County encourages residents to engage with and learn more about the contributions of Latiné communities. Many local institutions, including the Milwaukee Public Museum and Milwaukee Area Technical College, are hosting events to celebrate and educate on Latino history and culture.
