Issa Rae is wrapping up her five-year deal with HBO, sharing that she’s having difficulty coming up with titles for her upcoming projects. At the Variety Power of Women event, she revealed her struggles while accepting the Entertainment Entrepreneur Award. Rae, known for created and executive-producing hit shows like Insecure and Rap Sh!t, is currently developing a buddy-comedy series set in Las Vegas’s boxing scene, but it still lacks a name.
Rae mentioned that HBO has “rejected” some of her title proposals, jokingly noting, “I’ve got to come better.” She acknowledged the need to adapt her approach, stating she’s “writing like a male show.” The new series, titled Untitled Male Friendship Show, features two boxers, Menzel and JB, navigating their ambitions and insecurities in a high-stakes environment.
In addition to her television work, Rae starred in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and entered a three-year first-look film and television deal with Paramount.
