A Department of Energy electrical engineer, Ashton Hamed Ellaboudy, has been arrested for allegedly providing support to Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, which includes purchasing materials for explosives and drones and traveling to Yemen. The FBI’s investigation revealed Ellaboudy’s intent to enhance the Houthis’ communications capabilities.
Upon return to the U.S., Ellaboudy misrepresented his trip, claiming to be part of a government mission, a statement contradicted by his supervisor. The FBI noted Ellaboudy’s activities included purchasing chemicals for explosives and maintaining communication with informants, including one pretending to be a Houthi colonel. He faces charges under laws prohibiting support for designated foreign terrorist organizations, like the Houthis, with a Justice Department official describing the allegations as “deeply disturbing.”
