Charlotte Poet Nathaniel Perry Launches Poem Cast

NATHANIEL PERRY
Charlotte poet and voice artist Nathaniel Perry has embarked on an immersive adventure with his latest project, Poem Cast, which delves into themes of horror and dystopia.

Perry’s passion for these genres shines through his work, which can be experienced both online here and in person every Wednesday night at The Conspiracy, located at 412 W. Fifth St., Suite C120.

“I pick a horror movie over anything else, and I would pick up a book and read horror,” Perry shares. “It’s a genre that I like the most.”

What is Poem Cast?

Set in a hidden library beneath the mountains of Peru, Poem Cast explores a realm where the imaginations of everyone who has ever lived come to life, transforming into creatures and narratives. One of the standout offerings includes a vampire retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.”

With a background in communications and theater from Emerson College, Perry’s introduction to poetry blossomed from his experiences in black box theater. He relishes the intimate nature of performing poetry, emphasizing the importance of clarity, articulation, and tone.

“I began writing poetry about a decade ago, and the process can be quite erratic,” Perry explains. “Ideas strike unexpectedly, and I simply jot them down when inspiration hits.”

A Three-Dimensional Experience

Poem Cast transforms traditional poetry into a multi-sensory experience, integrating audio, sound design, visuals, and text. Perry aims to elevate poetry to an art form that captivates and moves audiences in unique ways.

“I want to make it a performance,” he states. “Poems can evoke feelings that other writings may not.”

Looking forward, Perry envisions Poem Cast evolving in a cinematic direction to engage viewers more fully.

“There’s so much media out there now. It’s tough to grab attention with people swiping through feeds quickly,” Perry reflects. “I hope people find it entertaining, and if they see deeper meanings, that’s an added bonus.”

Representation in Horror

Perry also hopes to expand the representation of Black men in horror through his artistic endeavors. He draws inspiration from figures like Jordan Peele, recognizing the need for more voices in a genre he passionately loves.

“We’re out here, we love it, and it’s our passion,” Perry asserts. “It’s been my passion for a long time.”
