Vital Energy: Halt the Archbald Data Centers and Ongoing Power Plant Discussion

Archbald Power Plant Controversy Continues

Residents of Archbald are pressing back against Essential Energy LLC’s proposed 400-megawatt natural gas power plant on Eynon Jermyn Road. During a borough council meeting, attorney Justin Richards, representing locals against the project, questioned whether the project’s conceptual design sufficiently addresses public health and safety concerns.

Andrew Markle, technical lead for KCI Technologies and representative for Essential Energy, asserted the project can be built safely, despite the absence of detailed plans. This is the sixth hearing on the application, which has drawn substantial public interest, with around 70 attendees voicing their opinions.

Key concerns raised by residents include the plant’s proximity to homes, schools, and recreational areas like Staback Park. Opponents have demanded clear evidence of safety measures, emphasizing Archbald’s zoning requirements that necessitate credible proof of safety to approve such projects.

Markle defended the application’s evolving nature, likening the design process to standard industry practices, where details become clearer over time. He referenced his experience overseeing a significant number of power plants and reassured residents about emergency response and safety protocols.

However, residents remained skeptical, particularly regarding the design and routing of natural gas pipelines needed for the plant, questioning the adequacy of safeguards. The debate highlights deep community division over the project’s potential impact.

The next hearing is scheduled for October 27, where further discussions will take place as the townspeople continue to seek assurances about the future of their community.
