Pope: The environmental crisis of our era is increasingly urgent.

In a meeting with the Hera Group, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the need for a “culture of care” to combat the “throwaway culture” dominating modern society. Highlighting the urgency of environmental challenges, he called for a shift away from consumerism to a sustainable production system that preserves our planet’s limited resources.

The Hera Group, which manages waste and utility services in the Vatican, has committed to sustainability and has implemented various initiatives, including using electric vehicles for waste collection and promoting plastic recycling during the 2025 Jubilee.

Pope Leo XIV lauded their recycling efforts and stressed that countering wastefulness extends beyond material goods to encompass human dignity and responsibility. He urged Christians to reject a culture of waste and instead promote mindful stewardship of creation, reinforcing the importance of recycling and sustainable practices as a moral imperative for future generations.
