“It Poses a Challenge for My Body”: Miranda Hart Discusses How ME Affects Her on The Celebrity Traitors

Miranda Hart’s Return to TV Amidst Chronic Illness

Miranda Hart is making a highly anticipated comeback on TV as a contestant in the second season of The Celebrity Traitors. Alongside notable names such as Bella Ramsey and Romesh Ranganathan, Miranda will navigate the competitive landscape of gaming and strategy while managing her chronic illness, myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME).

What is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)?

Myalgic encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), is a long-term condition that can affect multiple body systems. The exact cause remains unknown, but it is characterized by:

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Cognitive issues, often referred to as “brain fog”
  • Symptoms exacerbated by physical or mental exertion (post-exertional malaise)

Diagnosis is typically symptom-based since no specific tests confirm the condition.

Miranda Hart’s Journey with ME

Miranda has been largely absent from the screen due to her struggles with ME, which developed after she contracted Lyme disease. In her upcoming book I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You, she details the profound effects of her illness on her career and personal life.

In interviews leading up to the release, Miranda expressed how being confined to her bed altered her outlook on life, saying, “Once you’ve been bed- and house-bound… you miss life a lot.”

Competing in The Celebrity Traitors with ME

Before The Celebrity Traitors commenced, Miranda candidly shared her challenges with ME. She stated, “I’m still living with elements of ME, and that brings fatigue and pain to manage… I feel well enough to step out,” emphasizing her desire to reconnect with the joy of performing.

While she anticipates the physical demands of the show might be taxing, she remains optimistic about the experience. “The joy of mucking about on television again will hopefully outweigh some of the challenges,” she said.

Miranda acknowledged the often invisible nature of chronic illnesses, adding, “When you live with a chronic illness, it’s invisible… everybody’s got their thing… I’m really looking forward to making friends and looking after each other.”

Despite the hurdles, her excitement about returning to a fun, game-oriented project is palpable. “I just wanted to jump about like a schoolgirl with joy,” she reflected, underscoring her love for playing games and engaging in outdoor activities.
