Hegseth unveils new autonomous weapons division, critiquing ‘woke’ culture in address to soldiers.

New Pentagon Command for Autonomous Warfare Announced

In a speech on Wednesday at Quantico, Virginia, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth unveiled the establishment of the new Autonomous Warfare Command. This command will focus on AI robotics and other autonomous weapons and will be led by a four-star general, highlighting its prominent role in future military operations. Hegseth emphasized the significant implications this technological shift poses for military strategy and organization.

He cited lessons from the war in Ukraine as a catalyst for this initiative. Additionally, Hegseth introduced Project Agincourt, aimed at streamlining how the military acquires and integrates drones and similar technologies. The Pentagon plans to launch this command by October 2027.

Hegseth’s address also reiterated his criticism of military culture and policies. He proposed cutting the ranks of senior officers by 20%, doubling a previous reduction target established in May 2025. His firings have been controversial, prompting reactions from lawmakers and resulting in the resignation of former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll.

Among the notable attendees at the speech were Tesla’s Elon Musk and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, both of whom will lead a new study group called Project Meridian. Hegseth outlined initiatives for modernizing U.S. bases, improving supply chain resilience, and exploring new military base locations.

The Secretary reiterated his past views on military fitness and appearance standards, labeling the current military culture as “woke.” He noted a shift in attendance at the event, with a focus on junior officers and noncommissioned personnel rather than senior leaders, indicating a strategy to engage lower-level leaders directly in military reform.

Hegseth concluded his remarks with religious undertones, advocating for changes to the military chaplaincy to enhance faith integration within the armed forces, citing data reflecting the religious beliefs of the majority of military personnel.

This announcement aligns with broader military strategies aiming to adapt and modernize in response to evolving warfare dynamics.
