Consumers Energy is planning to build a natural gas plant at its Karn Energy Center in Bay County, Michigan. An open house was held for residents to review the plans and provide feedback. Many, including local resident Sandra Miner, expressed optimism about the project, highlighting its potential benefits.
The proposed plant would replace two older units at the site, part of the energy center since 1975, which are nearing the end of their operational life. Consumers Energy’s vice president, David Hicks, noted that the new facility aims to not only provide power but also create construction jobs, permanent employment, and boost local tax revenues.
Approval from local governmental entities and the Michigan Public Service Commission is still required, with the target completion date for the plant set for 2031. In addition, Consumers is also considering a natural gas plant in Thetford Township, aligned with its long-term Energy Supply Plan.
