AC/DC: Is Duke Energy’s Small-Scale Nanogrid the Key to Future Energy Solutions?

The mobile tiny home, featured in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s 2026 Innovative Housing Showcase, will soon showcase at the North Carolina State Fair, attracting attention for its ties to microgrids and minigrids, especially in light of the state’s recovery from Hurricane Helene.

Duke Energy plans to conduct further testing to evaluate the performance of a hybrid nanogrid compared to a fully grid-connected model to assess potential savings and innovative electric solutions. The aim is to possibly reduce dependence on existing power plants, enhancing efficiency and sustainability.

The team, led by John Landy from Duke Energy, is eager to explore how hybrid architectures might benefit various customer classes, especially given the increasing DC load demands. There’s a push for developing standards and codes for direct current systems due to existing safety and compatibility challenges.

In the realm of all-DC microgrids, companies like Hyde Park Partners have demonstrated successful commercial applications over the past decade, emphasizing their viability in reducing losses and promoting resilience. Organizations such as the Current/OS Foundation advocate for the integration of renewables through DC microgrids at the grid edge to lower costs and enhance efficiency.
