Tom Pohlad: Twins Will Make Significant Payroll Investments, Aim to Compete by 2027

In 2026, Tom Pohlad took on the role of the Minnesota Twins’ designated control person, marking a new era in franchise leadership. His goal is to shift the team’s focus towards competing for playoff spots, rather than engaging in a lengthy rebuild. After a disappointing end to the season, with the Twins finishing at 77-85—an improvement over the previous year but not enough—Pohlad expressed the need for increased expectations heading into the offseason.

He emphasized the urgency for the team to be competitive, stating that a payroll increase is anticipated, although specifics were not disclosed. Historically, Minnesota’s payroll has fluctuated, with sharp cuts in previous years. Pohlad acknowledged the importance of investing meaningfully to improve team performance.

The team plans to be aggressive in free agency and explore extending promising younger players. Currently, only a few key players are under contract for 2027. While no immediate return to 2023 payroll levels is expected, Pohlad’s comments leave room for significant transactions that could elevate the Twins’ chances in the reasonably competitive AL Central division.

Pohlad reaffirmed that both GM Jeremy Zoll and manager Derek Shelton will remain in their roles, emphasizing continuity in leadership. He also noted that the family will maintain majority ownership after recent changes in minority stake ownership.

In player news, outfielder Walker Jenkins will have minor elbow surgery, which is not expected to impact his availability for next season. Jenkins, a top prospect, made his MLB debut in 2026, indicating the Twins’ commitment to building a competitive roster for the future.
