The upcoming StarCraft game is set to transition from real-time strategy (RTS) to an open-world shooter, presenting significant development challenges. According to Dan Hay, the general manager for StarCraft, one unique hurdle relates to integrating functional doors into the gameplay. This seemingly minor detail becomes complex when factoring in player perspective and character size, especially when characters are equipped with heavy armor.
Hay emphasized the importance of creating a logical world where elements like doors operate fluidly. The developers aim to ensure that the scale and spectacle of the environment resonate with players, enhancing their immersive experience. Annalee Hartling, an associate manager in development, highlighted the emotional and aesthetic impact of observing elements like barracks from a first-person perspective, rather than a top-down view.
This shift in perspective and scale is regarded as crucial for player engagement, with the game expected to launch in 2030.
