Enable Ventures secures $50.3 million to fund disability technology and tackle wealth disparities.

Breaking New Ground in Disability Investment

Not long ago, most investors viewed disability primarily as a charitable cause. However, this perspective is changing rapidly, as noted by disability rights lawyer turned venture capitalist Regina Kline.

Impact Investment in Disability

A significant case in point is the debut fund of Enable Ventures, co-founded by Kline and Jim Sorenson from Sorenson Impact. This $50.3 million fund aims to support founders creating technology tailored for individuals with disabilities, backed by a diverse mix of corporate, finance, and foundation limited partners including the Ford Foundation and UnitedHealth Group.

Diverse Supporters

Some notable limited partners include:

  • Next50 Foundation
  • Britebound
  • Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation
  • Weingart Foundation
  • Liberty Mutual Investments
  • Ascension Investment Management

Social Finance has also committed to this innovative approach through its Impact-First Fund.

Investing in Inclusion

Enable Ventures intends to invest in two dozen early-stage companies led by or co-designed with people with disabilities. Some of their current investments include:

  • Cionic: A company producing wearable technology for individuals with neurological conditions.
  • Kalogon: Selling specialized seat cushions for wheelchair users.
  • Daivergent: Providing training and job placement for individuals with autism and neurodivergence in IT and customer service roles.

Kline emphasizes that artificial intelligence designed with lived experiences at its core presents opportunities to remove barriers for these individuals.

An Untapped Market

Kline identifies a substantial opportunity, envisioning a “two trillion dollar hole in the global GDP” where talent from the disability community could significantly contribute. According to Sorenson, products developed with disability challenges central to their design can yield competitive, market-rate returns while enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

Regina Kline and Jim Sorenson are leading a promising shift in the investment landscape, focusing on a sector that has been historically overlooked but is now ripe for innovative and impactful solutions.
