Efficient Computer Co. has successfully secured $97 million in its latest funding round, led by TQ Ventures and supported by various other investors. This follows a previous $60 million round in February, bringing the company’s total funding to $650 million.
Efficient is developing an innovative energy-efficient computer chip utilizing a data flow architecture, which aims to drastically reduce power consumption—potentially by up to 100 times compared to conventional x86 architecture used by major companies like Intel and AMD. These chips are being positioned as essential for powering devices in energy-intensive AI environments.
The current chip landscape has been criticized for prioritizing performance over energy efficiency. Efficient’s chips aim to minimize unnecessary data movement and architectural overheads, enhancing both power efficiency and programmability. The initial target market includes small robots and autonomous drones, with the potential to later expand into larger data center applications.
Brandon Lucia, the CEO, noted overwhelming demand for their Electron E1 chip while TQ Ventures partner Andrew Marks highlighted the company’s dual capacity to build both hardware and software for a competitive edge. The recent funds will facilitate expanded production and increased shipments to meet demand.
