Qnetic Launches Low-Speed Testing of 200kWh Flywheel Energy Storage Prototype Following 100 Flawless Cycle Trials

Qnetic’s Pulsar Energy Storage Prototype Progress

Qnetic has successfully moved its Pulsar energy storage prototype, which has a capacity of 200 kilowatt-hours, into low-speed testing after completing 100 back-to-back charge-discharge cycles without faults or degradation. This suggests that flywheel storage could become a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries, particularly in addressing the challenges of renewable energy storage.

Overview of Pulsar’s Testing Phase

  • Current Testing: Engineers are validating Pulsar’s control and safety systems at low speeds before advancing to higher rotational speeds.
  • Mechanical Assembly: The prototyping process included structural and component tests, significantly reducing technical risks before full-speed operations.
  • Energy Storage Method: Unlike chemical storage in batteries, Qnetic’s system harnesses energy through mechanical motion. It accelerates a heavy rotor in a frictionless vacuum chamber, storing energy that can be converted back to power when needed.

Addressing Renewable Energy Challenges

The intermittency of renewable sources like solar and wind makes energy storage crucial. Flywheels may provide a more durable and efficient option compared to lithium-ion batteries, which can degrade over time.

Development and Validation Strategy

Qnetic is adopting a cautious approach by increasing operational demands gradually. Insights from Pulsar testing are shared with the Electric Power Research Institute as part of the deRISKED program, ensuring transparency and measured performance assessment.

Future of Flywheel Storage

If Qnetic’s testing demonstrates consistent performance at higher speeds, it could reaffirm flywheels as a strong contender for grid storage. While it won’t immediately replace lithium-ion solutions, it may offer a scalable and more durable alternative for renewable energy storage.
