Zack Ostapchuk: A Rising Star for the San Jose Sharks
Background and Transition:
Zack Ostapchuk began last season with the San Jose Barracuda after being traded from the Ottawa Senators. He viewed this transition positively, using his time in the minors to regain confidence. “Get some confidence back, and when I came back up (to the Sharks) I got an opportunity,” he reflected on his experience.
Leadership Role:
Ostapchuk, now 23, has made significant strides since training camp last year, earning the title of alternate captain for the Sharks’ pre-season. Coach Ryan Warsofsky praised his development, noting his hard work both on and off the ice has made him a role model for younger players.
Off-Season Focus
Conditioning and Skill Development:
Ostapchuk emphasized improving his conditioning to enhance his forechecking ability. He aimed to maintain his intensity on the ice for longer periods while honing skills that would allow him to retain possession during plays.
Faceoff Improvement:
He expressed a desire to excel in face-offs, stressing the importance of winning puck possession, especially during penalty kills. He collaborates with teammates on this aspect, aiming for collective improvement.
Team Dynamics
Deep Forward Group:
Ostapchuk acknowledged the competitive atmosphere created by the Sharks’ robust forward group, which inspires players to elevate their game regularly. “You’ve got to bring it every day if you want to be in the lineup,” he commented, highlighting the healthy competition as beneficial for everyone.
Filling Big Shoes:
Discussing the departure of Ryan Reaves, Ostapchuk noted the importance of team toughness. While acknowledging that Reaves was a strong presence, he feels the team made additions to maintain their toughness.
On Alexander Karmanov:
He also remarked on 7-foot-1 Alexander Karmanov, humorously noting how Karmanov dwarfs even tall teammates like Darnell Nurse.
