The inaugural Culture Commons Festival recently took place in Eureka’s Old Town and waterfront, celebrating the rich diversity of culture in Humboldt County through music, dance, art, film, storytelling, workshops, and food. Recognized as a Cultural Arts District in California, Eureka aims to foster engagement among its multi-ethnic artists and creatives.
Matthew Morassutti, the district’s director, emphasized the partnership among various groups, including the Wiyot Tribe and local organizations, to ensure that the festival represents all community voices. The festival, which attracted an expected crowd of 5,000 to 10,000 people, featured an extensive program, including performances from West African dancers, capoeira, taiko drummers, and more.
Attendees enjoyed a range of activities, from workshops to kids’ spaces, while local food vendors showcased regional cuisines. Participants emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating artistic diversity, indicating a strong community interest in continuing such events.
