Pope Leo XIV cautions against the ‘deterioration of culture’ in the era of AI.

In a recent speech at UNESCO, Pope Leo XIV addressed the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on culture and humanity. He warned that AI could lead to a “corruption of culture,” undermining our understanding of what it means to be human. The pontiff emphasized that while AI can analyze data, it cannot address profound questions about human life that come from lived experiences.

During his address, Leo linked the confusion associated with AI to the biblical Tower of Babel, contrasting it with the peace signified by Pentecost. He expressed concern about the spread of misinformation and the degradation of meaningful dialogue in a world increasingly dominated by technological advances.

The Pope highlighted the importance of caring for vulnerable populations, stating that true respect for human dignity involves protecting those marginalized by society, such as children, the elderly, and migrants. He criticized a societal tendency to value human life based solely on productivity.

Pope Leo also reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to dialogue and collaboration with UNESCO in promoting peace and human dignity. He stressed that authentic human development relies on a foundation of truth, warning that the corruption of law starts with a corrupted heart.

Following his address, the pontiff was warmly received by the audience, marking a significant moment during his visit to France.
