Nearly All Investors Hold All Seven of the “Magnificent Seven” Stocks—And That’s a Mistake.

The “Magnificent Seven” stocks are leading players in the market, comprising Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Meta Platforms (META), Microsoft (MSFT), Nvidia (NVDA), and Tesla (TSLA). Coined by Bank of America’s Michael Hartnett in 2023, this term underscores their strong brands and tech focus.

While it seems beneficial to own all seven, it might not be a wise investing strategy. Here’s why:

  1. Overlap in Business Models: Many of these companies are competing in similar fields, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). For instance, both Meta and Alphabet are developing foundational AI models, while Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet are heavily invested in cloud platforms hosting AI applications.

  2. Risk Exposure: Concentrating investments in companies that move as a group can increase risk. If AI technologies face setbacks, all corresponding stocks may decline simultaneously.

  3. Diversification is Key: Instead of investing in all seven, consider a diversified portfolio of around 50 stocks across various sectors, which helps manage risks better.

  4. Index Funds and ETFs: Investing in an index fund (like an S&P 500 ETF) can provide exposure to these stocks while minimizing risk across numerous companies. An AI-focused ETF could also be beneficial, provided it’s balanced with other diversified investments.

  5. Targeted Choices: It can be wise to select two or three companies from the Magnificent Seven based on gaps in your portfolio or your confidence in their business models. For example, Alphabet’s diverse offerings (search, YouTube, Android) contrast with Amazon’s e-commerce and streaming focus, while Tesla remains unique as an auto manufacturer.

In summary, while the Magnificent Seven are influential, strategic diversification and targeted selection are vital for effective long-term investing.
