SC: Officials Provide Update Following Fire That Devastated Downtown Businesses

Walhalla Fire Update: Seven Downtown Businesses Destroyed

WALHALLA, S.C. — A devastating fire broke out at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, destroying seven businesses on East Main Street in downtown Walhalla. The area remains closed as fire crews continue their efforts.

Fire crews are currently focusing on a business at the corner of North Catherine Street due to significant debris piles, which could pose risks of rekindling. Walhalla Administrator David Poulson emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring of the site to prevent flare-ups.

Although the fire has been contained, officials haven’t declared it fully extinguished. Poulson stated, “There is a lot of wood and other materials that could still be smoldering, potentially igniting again.”

Current Efforts and Road Closures

Fire crews are now in the cleanup phase and aim to reopen East Main Street to the public soon, though North Catherine Street will remain closed for an extended period. Poulson noted that clearing glass and debris is a priority before reopening the roads.

Once East Main Street is accessible, business owners will be allowed to assess the damage to their properties.
