Labor Day Travel in Central Kentucky
Traffic Increase and Traveling Plans
As Labor Day approaches, thousands of Americans are hitting the road, and Kentucky is no exception. AAA has noted an increase in travelers, with many Central Kentuckians taking short getaways despite rising costs for gas, flights, and hotel accommodations.
Grayson Campbell from Versailles shared her excitement about heading to Kings Island with her coworkers. Although she noticed heavier traffic on the roads, it didn’t dampen her spirits as they planned to carpool to their destination.
“We’re going to carpool in the back of a minivan. So, I’m really excited,” Campbell said.
Rising Gas Prices
AAA reports that gas prices this Labor Day are significantly higher than last year. In 2022, the average price per gallon in Kentucky was $2.92; currently, it has climbed to $3.83.
Drew Rincon, residing in Lexington, expressed similar concerns while preparing for a trip to Somerset for a track practice with his son. He noted that the traffic this weekend was noticeably worse.
“It took probably about 15 extra minutes to get home versus the normal 15-minute ride,” Rincon shared.
Wyatt Rincon, Drew’s 16-year-old son, had some advice for fellow travelers, urging them to drive safely and enjoy their holiday.
Enhanced Safety Measures
In response to the anticipated traffic increase, Kentucky State Police are implementing Operation CARE, launching extra patrols on highways and interstates to promote safety on the roads.
