Posh Pets Rescue has successfully renewed its contract to manage Long Beach’s animal shelter for an additional five years, enhancing its commitment to animal welfare in the area. The shelter, located at 770 Park Place, has seen significant operational improvements since Posh Pets took over, leading to a consistent intake of nearly 40 cats and dogs and facilitating around 500 to 600 adoptions each year.
The contract renewal was unanimously approved during the City Council meeting on September 1, highlighting the organization’s effective management compared to previous operations. City Manager Dan Creighton praised Posh Pets for providing a no-kill shelter environment, which has been pivotal for local animal care.
Originally receiving $95,000 in funding back in 2014, Posh Pets’ financial support has increased to $200,000 annually due to their ongoing success. However, this is a fraction of the shelter’s nearly $700,000 operating budget, with Posh Pets reporting operational costs around $430,000 for facility upkeep and $250,000 for rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
Recent infrastructure improvements include a new HVAC system, necessary following reports of poor ventilation from health officials. The cost of the upgrade is around $390,000, with the majority funded by a state grant.
Additionally, there are opportunities for community involvement, such as fostering shelter dogs or volunteering, particularly highlighted by the upcoming Posh-a-Thon charity walk and adoption event scheduled for November 8.
