Leaders of Mexican American culture come together in ‘Mariachi Meets the Smiths’

The upcoming show “Mariachi Meets the Smiths” by Mariachi Tierra Mia at the Ford amphitheater highlights the unexpected cultural fusion between traditional mariachi music and the melancholic lyrics of British band The Smiths. This collaboration was inspired by a chance performance where band member Ivan Peña sang a Smiths song at a Christmas party, which resonated deeply with audiences and garnered millions of views online.

The popularity of Morrissey and his music among Mexicans and Mexican Americans can be attributed to their shared outsider mentality and emotional depth, paralleling themes found in ranchera music. Despite Morrissey’s controversial political statements, many fans, including Peña, advocate separating the artist’s views from the art itself.

The concert will feature bilingual mariachi pieces and Smiths covers, maintaining the original compositions while adapting the music for mariachi instruments. Peña believes the connection between Mexicans and The Smiths boils down to relatable themes of angst, rebellion, and optimism, making the music universally appealing.
