48th Annual International Folk Festival Kicks Off in Fayetteville, NC
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) – The 48th annual International Folk Festival begins this Friday in downtown Fayetteville, celebrating Cumberland County’s longest-running family event. The festival showcases over 20 cultural groups from around the globe.
Hosted by the Fayetteville-Cumberland Arts Council, this free two-day festival runs from September 25 to 26, transforming Hay Street into a vibrant hub of international cuisine, music, and traditions. It will take place at Festival Park, located at 335 Ray Ave.
Organizers expect to welcome between 25,000 and 30,000 attendees, featuring activities such as the Parade of Nations with more than 1,000 marchers, a petting zoo, and a variety of family-friendly events.
Kennon Jackson, president and CEO of the Arts Council, emphasized the importance of cultural expression, stating, “These are cultures who want to carry on through their regalia, through their dance, through their art.”
With Fort Bragg nearby, the festival resonates with local families and military communities familiar with diverse cultures. Jackson noted, “We know that there are a lot of families here that appreciate the cultures they’ve experienced abroad.”
This year’s festival highlights traditions from India, Thailand, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and others. Jackson pointed out that the event goes beyond entertainment; it fosters community and connection.
Attendees can look forward to starting their weekend on September 25 at 6 p.m. with the Fiesta de la Calle, a lively street party that sets the celebratory tone.
Highlights:
- Fiesta de la Calle: Friday, Sept 25 at 6 p.m.
- Parade of Nations: Saturday, Sept 26 at 10 a.m.
