A Cosmic Nobel? Specialists Suggest the International Space Station as a Candidate for the Peace Prize

Nobel Peace Prize Predictions: A Galactic or Terrestrial Choice?

STAVANGER – This year’s Nobel Peace Prize could take an unexpected turn, with the International Space Station (ISS) being a notable contender. However, terrestrial candidates also stand out, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, emergency teams in Sudan, advocates for children in Ukraine, and two major international courts.

As the anticipation builds for the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s announcement on October 9 in Oslo, experts point out that predicting the winner often involves speculation and surprises. This year, there are 287 nominees, with about a quarter being organizations.

According to Haakon Gjerløw, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, the ISS resonates as a symbol of international cooperation during a time of rising nationalism. The committee often prioritizes enduring peace, promoting global fraternity, and the efforts of institutions toward these goals.

While Trump is a repeated nominee keen on the prize, his candidacy may be viewed controversially due to ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions. Carney’s international stance, particularly against Trump on tariffs, has also gained attention.

Other candidates mentioned include Ukrainian children’s advocate Mykola Kuleba, grassroots relief teams in Sudan, and the Committee to Protect Journalists, reflecting the recent struggle faced by media professionals globally.

The International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court have also made the list, navigating complexities amid critiques and calls for accountability against leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Experts indicate the chaotic global peace landscape, marked by conflicts in regions like Ukraine, Sudan, and the Middle East, complicates the award selection.

Jody Williams, a past laureate, expresses hope for a continued trend of recognizing women, as female laureates remain significantly underrepresented historically. Names like Gaza surgeon Sara al-Saqqa and Russian opposition figure Yulia Navalnaya are also circulating among predictions.

Nobel week starts with the medicine prize announcement, leading up to a series of awards concluding with the peace prize on October 9. The prize money totals 12 million Swedish kronor (around $1.2 million).

Regardless of who wins, the political implications will undoubtedly be impactful. As noted by Nelson Wiseman, any victor could provoke displeasure from Trump, especially if the choice is perceived as unfavorable to U.S. interests.
