8BitDo FlipPad Review: The Ultimate Mobile Gaming Companion
Mobile gaming has evolved significantly, especially since Apple allowed emulators on the App Store. Among the standout apps is Delta, a reliable choice for retro gaming during train delays or when a book doesn’t captivate me. However, I’m not inclined to carry bulky gaming controllers around, even sleek ones like the Backbone One.
That’s why I was intrigued by the 8BitDo FlipPad. This compact gamepad clips onto your phone, offering a space-efficient enhancement to your gaming experience.
A Marvel of Compact Design
The FlipPad features a flat design with a hinged USB-C plug that connects directly to your phone. Once attached, it transforms your phone’s orientation to resemble that of an old GameBoy. This ergonomic setup is both familiar and effective, proving to be as satisfying as its tactile buttons, which are clicky and respond well.
Button Layout and Functionality
It’s crucial to note that the FlipPad lacks an analogue stick, focusing instead on a classic gaming experience geared towards NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Advance titles. However, it does feature four function buttons and two shoulder buttons, allowing for some customization. My tests with Delta showed seamless recognition of the layout, enabling easy adjustments.
Despite a minor issue where Delta didn’t adjust the on-screen display to account for the controller, I found a workaround by tweaking the settings to show the touch button layout. This minor hiccup didn’t detract from the overall experience, which was vastly enhanced for quick-button-press GBA titles.
Conclusion
For retro gaming enthusiasts on the go, the 8BitDo FlipPad is an obvious choice, provided it fits your phone model. Its compact design and effective functionality elevate mobile gaming, making it a likely staple in my tech pouch for the foreseeable future.
