New York Grants 1.7 GW for Renewable Energy and Storage Initiatives

New York is significantly expanding its energy infrastructure, focusing on both renewable energy and energy storage. Key initiatives include:

  1. Major Projects:

    • Key Capture Energy (KCE) NY 37: 150 MW/4-hour duration.
    • Lighthouse Energy Storage Project: 140 MW/8-hour capacity.

These projects will enhance grid reliability and must comply with new safety codes starting January 1, 2026.

  2. Investment:

    • Renewable projects are expected to attract over $2 billion in investment.
    • Storage facilities will spur an additional $1.6 billion.
  3. Operational Goals:

    • All projects aim to be operational by 2030, with payments provided once they are operational.
  4. Energy Capacity:

    • New York currently has 95 energy projects with a combined capacity of nearly 10.5 GW.
  5. Future Plans:

    • NYSERDA aims for 3 GW of energy storage by 2025 and 6 GW by 2030, issuing additional proposals for energy storage by the end of 2026.
  6. Solar Targets:

    • New York plans to achieve 10 GW of distributed solar capacity by 2030, doubling to 20 GW by 2035.

These actions align with New York’s goal of reducing fossil fuel dependency while enhancing the clean energy economy, stated by NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Amanda Lefton.
