Brown Family Ranch Hosts Largest Annual Rodeo in Gary
Renowned horseback riders from across the nation are set to converge at the Brown Family Ranch for the 11th Annual Gaming Show Rodeo this weekend in Gary. The event is scheduled for 3 to 8 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, located at 2246 Mississippi St.
Event Highlights
About 150 competitors from Illinois, Wisconsin, Georgia, Texas, and South Carolina will showcase their skills in various events, including timed competitions, roping, and speed and agility courses.
Chris Brown, a co-owner of the ranch, noted the continued growth of the event: “Each year it gets bigger and bigger,” reflecting on last year’s participation of 120 competitors. The community-oriented rodeo has evolved from a small bonfire event among equestrians into a vibrant celebration of horsemanship.
In addition to the competitions, attendees can enjoy:
- Food vendors serving Southern cuisine and baked goods
- Live music by Kevin “K James” Edwards on Saturday night
- Mini pony rides, face painting, and bounce houses for kids
The rodeo will feature various animals, including horses, broncos, cattle, sheep, and goats, with activities specifically designed for children.
Community Impact
Funds raised from ticket sales support the Brown Family Ranch Community Outreach Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors and college students. The ranch also runs educational programs, such as a summer camp focusing on agriculture and equestrian skills, which positively impacts local youth.
Chris Brown reminisces about his own childhood experiences with horses, imparted by his family, which shaped his love for horsemanship and patience.
A Legacy of Learning
The ranch, which was established over 50 years ago by Johnny Brown, aims to educate the local community about farming and equestrian care. This mission is carried out by Chris and his wife, Nakisha Brown, who run the ranch and its programs.
Despite recent challenges from a severe storm damaging their facilities, the Brown family remains committed to hosting the rodeo and uplifting the community.

Tickets for the event are priced at $20 for adults and $7 for children under 5, with cash-only sales at the door. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating.
