Energy Department to invest $2 billion to enhance electricity output from the aging power grid.

The U.S. Energy Department has announced a significant investment of nearly $2 billion to enhance the country’s aging power grid, aiming to meet the rising electricity demands driven by the surge in artificial intelligence technologies. This funding will support 31 projects across 26 states, which are expected to generate over 23 gigawatts of additional electricity capacity — enough to power approximately 16 million homes.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright highlighted that these projects will incorporate new technologies, such as sensors, to monitor real-time weather conditions and adjust power distribution accordingly. The upgrades are expected to improve reliability and reduce electricity costs for around 100 million Americans.

The announcement coincides with growing concerns that the increasing energy requirements of new data centers could outpace the expansion of power generation capabilities, leading to potential blackouts and rising electricity bills. Trump’s administration has favored data center development even amidst opposition from some communities and political criticism. The funding aligns with the bipartisan infrastructure law, aiming for rapid implementation of projects to help mitigate electricity price spikes, particularly during extreme weather events.

Overall, the initiative seeks to modernize the grid and ensure it can handle the surge in demand while promoting the country’s energy sector growth.
