Renowned Pets (Edie Brickell, Matt Chamberlain) Explore the Unfamiliar in Their Diverse Debut Album (REVIEW)

Album Review: World Famous Pets

Opening Track: “Hadna Been for Your”
“Hadna Been for Your,” the debut album’s opening track, serves as a masterclass in album introductions. The sudden onset of Matt Chamberlain’s galloping drums sets an energetic tone, immediately followed by Kaveh Rastegar’s bass and Mason Stoop’s textured guitar. Edie Brickell’s bluesy, fluid melody, complemented by background vocals, builds tension before seamlessly transitioning through varied tempos. The song’s climax, marked by a lush synth backdrop, concludes on an intriguing musical question, encapsulating the album’s adventurous spirit.

Album Overview
This debut showcases a rich tapestry of sounds, skillfully navigating expectations. Originating from the partnership of Brickell and Chamberlain during the Ghost of a Dog era, the two reconnected on Paul Simon’s Quiet Celebration Tour, leading to the formation of World Famous Pets. Joined by Stoops and Rastegar, they recorded across several locations, including Los Angeles and New York City.

Collaborative Spirit
The collective songwriting process is evident throughout the album, with all members contributing to each track, except for “Next,” which features additional collaborator Benny Bock. Emphasizing collaboration and improvisation, Brickell praises her bandmates as “monster players,” highlighting their dynamic interaction.

Brickell’s Centerpiece Role
Brickell’s improvisational flair elevates the album, blending whimsical lyrics with engaging melodies. Her versatility shines across various tracks, allowing her to maintain an uplifting atmosphere. From sardonic reflections in “Bleeding in the Dark” to the heartfelt “Truly,” Brickell’s presence is magnetic.

Musical Synergy
Chamberlain’s drumming injects a vibrant energy, even during intense moments, as heard in the standout track “Maybe Somehow.” Rastegar and Stoops share a unique chemistry, often defying traditional roles, which enhances the album’s character. However, “Maybe Somehow” and “Guess It’s You” hint at more conventional dynamics.

Production Flaws
Despite its strengths, the production by Kyle Crusham introduces some muddiness, particularly with synths and electronic elements. This affects overall clarity, requiring attentive listening to fully appreciate the music. Nonetheless, the quality of the songwriting and performance shines through, affirming that the record is a solid debut for World Famous Pets.
