Aminata Seck, a 26-year-old women’s basketball player from Senegal, was arrested by ICE at Louisville’s airport last month while traveling to a tournament. She entered the U.S. on a student visa but may have overstayed due to health issues, including back surgery and an ACL injury. The Department of Homeland Security stated that an immigration judge ordered her removal last year after she failed to attend a hearing.
Seck is currently receiving treatment at a hospital and remains in pain. Her situation has garnered attention, with U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey calling for justice and stating that her arrest highlights the previous administration’s harsh immigration policies. Last season, Seck excelled as a player, being named to the SIAC All-Conference Third Team and earning the Elite 16 academic award.
Kentucky State University has declined to comment on the situation.
