Viral TikTok Video Sparks Debate Over Pacu Fish’s Living Conditions
A TikTok creator known as “the fish maestro” has posted a video of his large pacu fish, humorously named “Uncle Steve,” which has stirred controversy regarding its living conditions. The video, which has garnered over 7.1 million views, shows Uncle Steve swimming slowly in a tank that appears too small for its size.
Background: The creator claims that Uncle Steve was won at a fair 30 years ago, but this contradicts his statement about the fish growing to fit the tank, raising questions among viewers.
Pacu Characteristics: Pacus, native to South America, are large freshwater fish known for their human-like teeth. They can grow over 3 feet long and weigh up to 88 pounds, making them inappropriate for average home aquariums. A care guide suggests a minimum tank size of 660 gallons for a single adult pacu.
Viewer Reactions: Many viewers expressed concern for Uncle Steve, comparing his situation to living in a confined space indefinitely. Calls for better regulations against selling such large fish in pet stores circulated in the comments.
Conclusion: The discussion highlights the responsibilities and challenges of fish ownership and the need for appropriate tank sizes to ensure the health and happiness of aquatic pets.
